The brand mark, on the other hand, is usually the visual symbol that can function even without the brand name.

Typical examples are the iconic Nike swoosh or the Apple apple. The company name does not necessarily need to appear for us to understand which brand is behind the symbol.

However, this does not mean that every business needs a standalone brand mark from the outset.

The right one logo design it starts from something much more important: where the logo will be used, which audience the business is aimed at, and how we want the brand to be recognised.

What is the logo?

The logo It is one of the most fundamental elements of a business's visual identity. Its aim is to make the brand recognisable in a clear and consistent way.

A logo can consist exclusively of the business name, initials, a graphic symbol, or a combination of text and symbol.

For example, a logo may have:

the company name,

specific font and typography,

an icon or symbol,

specific corporate colours,

different horizontal and vertical versions.

The important thing is that a professional logo it is not designed just to look pretty in a presentation. It has to work properly everywhere: on the website, on social media, on business cards, signage, printed materials, packaging and advertisements.

That is why the modern logo design treats the logo more as a small visual system rather than an isolated image.

What is a Brand Mark?;

The brand mark it is the distinctive graphic element or symbol that represents a brand without necessarily needing to display its name.

Think of Apple's apple or Nike's Swoosh. These are symbols that have acquired such a strong connection with their respective companies that they can be used autonomously.

In design terminology, we will also encounter the term pictorial mark, i.e. a visual icon representing a company or service.

The great advantage of a brand mark is its simplicity.

A well-designed symbol can be used as an Instagram profile picture, a website favicon, an app icon, a watermark on photographs, on products or even in very small dimensions where an entire logo would not be legible.

However, there is one important condition: the public must be able to connect the symbol with the business.

And this does not happen automatically.

Logo and Brand Mark: What is the difference after all?;

The simplest explanation is as follows:

The logo identifies the business. The brand mark can become the symbol through which we recognise it.

A logo can include the name DigitalPro along with a distinctive widget. The widget on its own can then be used as a brand mark.

And this is also the reason why in a comprehensive corporate identity design we shouldn't just think about «one version of the logo».

In practice, a business may need a primary logo, secondary logo, icon/brand mark, monochrome version and different variations for a light or dark background.

A proper branding system anticipates these different applications from the start. Adobe, for example, suggests in its brand guidelines that different versions of the logo should be defined along with rules regarding when each is used.

Why isn't a single logo always enough?;

Imagine you have a horizontal logo with a symbol, a long brand name and a tagline.

It can look brilliant in the header of a website.

But what happens when it has to be used as a favicon at a size of just a few pixels? Or within the small circular space of a profile picture? Or on a promotional item where the available space is minimal?;

That is where the problems begin.

If we simply try to shrink the entire logo, the brand name may become illegible and the result will lose its impact.

In these cases one brand mark It is particularly useful.

Instead of trying to use the exact same file everywhere, we are creating a flexible system that adapts to the available medium.

When should we use the full logo?;

The full logo is usually the best choice when we want the user to see it immediately what business is in front of him.

This is particularly important for new businesses or brands that have not yet gained a high level of recognition.

The full logo can be used on the website, business cards, corporate stationery, presentations, invoices, signage, advertisements and other places where there is sufficient space.

Especially at the beginning, the continuous appearance of the brand helps to create a connection between the name and the visual identity.

For this reason, for many new businesses a combination mark —that is, a combination of name and symbol—represents a particularly practical solution. The name offers immediate recognition, while the symbol can gradually acquire its own identity.

When is a Brand Mark best?;

The brand mark becomes particularly useful when the available space is limited or when the public is already familiar with the visual identity.

For example, it can be used as:

Social media profile picture. A simple symbol usually remains clearer and more recognisable within a small circle.

Favicon. There is not enough space in a browser tab for a whole logo.

App icon. Apps need a simple and distinctive visual.

Watermark. In photos and videos, we often want a subtle brand presence.

Merchandise and packaging. A recognisable symbol can work better than a big brand name.

Social media creatives. When the brand identity is already apparent through colours, typography and layout, the brand mark can act as a subtle signature.

So, the brand mark does not necessarily replace the logo. It complements it.

Does every business need to have a brand mark?;

Not necessarily as a standalone main logo.

A small or new business probably does not yet have the brand awareness required to communicate exclusively through a symbol.

If we display an unknown icon without the business name, the prospective customer might simply not know what it represents.

This is one reason why a combination logo can be particularly effective: the name and the symbol build recognition together.

As the brand grows, the symbol may begin to be used more frequently on its own.

Brand awareness, after all, isn't created just because we designed a nice icon. It is created through consistent use of corporate identity over time.

And what is a wordmark?;

There is yet another important category that often causes confusion: the wordmark.

A wordmark is a logo that is based primarily or exclusively on the typographical representation of the business name.

There isn't necessarily a separate symbol. The spelling of the name itself constitutes the recognisable element.

A prime example is Coca-Cola. The distinct typography of the brand name on its own is a powerful visual element.

A wordmark can be an excellent choice when the brand name is relatively short and distinctive.

It is therefore not necessary for each logo design to include an icon. The choice must be based on the actual needs of the brand and not on the perception that «a logo must necessarily have a design next to the name».

The logo is not the whole branding

Another common mistake is to assume that as soon as we acquire a new logo, we have completed the business's branding.

In reality, the logo is only one part of the corporate identity.

The overall image of a brand can include:

logo and its different versions,

brand mark or icon,

corporate colour palette,

typography and fonts,

photographic style,

icons and illustrations,

graphic design style for social media,

tone of voice and communication style,

rules for using all of the above.

Branding is therefore much bigger than a single graphic. It is the system that allows the business to present itself with consistency and recognisable personality at every customer touchpoint.

What should a professional logo design include?;

When a business invests in professional logo design, it is important that she doesn't just receive a JPEG of her logo.

The logo needs to be actually usable.

Depending on the project, a comprehensive package may include the main logo, alternative layouts, a brand mark, black-and-white and monochrome versions, versions for light and dark backgrounds, and files suitable for both digital and print.

Also of particular importance are vector files, as they allow the logo to be scaled up for a sign or print without loss of quality.

If there is a completed corporate identity, it is also useful to be accompanied by a brand guide that defines colours, fonts, safe spacing and correct or incorrect uses of the logo.

How do we choose between a Logo and a Brand Mark?;

The answer is usually not «one or the other».

For most modern businesses, the best approach is to have a flexible logo system.

A full logo can be used when a clear reference to the brand is needed. A compact version can cover smaller spaces. And a brand mark can be used when the symbol is sufficient or when the dimensions do not allow the entire logo to be displayed.

In this way the corporate identity remains consistent without becoming rigid.

The objective is not simply to create a beautiful design. It is to create an identity that it works in the daily communication of the business.

Logo design and branding by DigitalPro

At DigitalPro, we treat logo design as part of a business's overall image rather than an isolated piece of graphic design.

Before designing, we examine the business, its target audience, the competition, the tone of voice it wants to communicate and—very importantly—the touchpoints where the new identity will be used.

Because a hotel has different needs, an e-shop has different ones, and a technical, tourist or professional business has completely different ones.

The goal of a proper branding and logo design the result is recognisable, functional and versatile enough to be used across a website and social media, right down to a business card or a large sign.

Conclusion

A logo and a brand mark are not competing choices.

They are different tools within the same visual identity.

The full logo helps the customer to instantly connect the image with the business name.
